Terms of Use

Plain version: use it to play, be decent to the people you play with, don't use it to hurt anyone, and understand that it is a small product made by one person and it will sometimes break. Your stuff stays yours.

What this is

The Hearth is a web tool for preparing and running Dungeons & Dragons games — character sheets, maps, rules automation, campaign planning and a shared table with video. It is built and operated from Western Australia by a single developer.

It is currently free and in active development. Features change, and some of them will be broken when you find them.

Accounts

You need an account, and you need to give a real date of birth. The age we calculate from it controls which AI features the account can use, so an inaccurate one defeats a safety control rather than unlocking a feature.
Keep your password to yourself. Tell us if you think someone else has it.
One person per account.

Children. Children use The Hearth and are welcome. Accounts for under-13s have AI features restricted automatically — the detail is in the Privacy page. We do not currently accept accounts for under-13s in the United States.

If a child is in your game, this part matters. A campaign is a private group you invite people into, and invitations are links. If you are running a game that includes someone else's child, only invite people that child's parent or guardian would be happy to have at the table. If you are a parent, only let your child join games run by someone you know.

Your content is yours

The characters, campaigns, notes and maps you make stay yours. We store them so we can show them back to you, and we process them through the services listed in the Privacy page when you use a feature that needs it. We do not claim ownership and we do not use your campaigns to train anything.

What we ask you not to do

Do not use The Hearth to harass, threaten, or endanger anyone — especially not a child.
Do not upload sexual content involving minors, or content that sexualises a minor in any way. This is the one line where we will act immediately and involve the authorities.
Do not upload material you do not have the right to use.
Do not attempt to break the AI safety controls, particularly on an account belonging to a child.
Do not attack the service, scrape it, or try to reach other people’s data.

If you see something that breaks these, email us. We read those.

Artificial intelligence

Some features are AI-powered, and we tell you on screen when you are using one. You are talking to software, not a person. It can be wrong, and generated campaigns, NPCs, maps and rules answers should be treated as a first draft rather than an authority. Check anything that matters.

The Hearth is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Wizards of the Coast. Dungeons & Dragons and D&D are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC. We use only SRD material and our own original content — we do not reproduce text from published books, and we cannot import content you have bought elsewhere.

Availability

This is a small product in active development, run by one person. It will occasionally be down, features will change, and things will break — sometimes in the middle of your session, for which we apologise in advance. Keep anything you would be upset to lose backed up somewhere that is not us.

Leaving

You can stop using it whenever you like and ask us to delete your account and everything in it. Email us and we will do it — see the Privacy page for what that involves.

Australian law

These terms are governed by the law of Western Australia. Nothing here takes away any right you have under the Australian Consumer Law, including the consumer guarantees — those apply regardless of anything written on this page.
